The Lilbeckking Development Foundation (LIBEDEF) commemorated World Environment Day 2026 with a successful environmental awareness and advocacy program held at the University of Benin, Edo State.

The event attracted over 300 participants, including students, lecturers, farmers, environmental advocates, stakeholders, and members of the public, all united by a common goal of promoting environmental sustainability and climate action.
The programme focused on the urgent need for clean energy adoption, climate protection, and the role of agriculture in driving sustainable development in Nigeria. Participants engaged in insightful discussions on environmental challenges facing the nation and practical solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of LIBEDEF, Mr. Destiny O. Aigbokhae, emphasized the importance of returning to agriculture as a sustainable pathway to economic growth and environmental preservation. He highlighted the need for increased investment in renewable energy, particularly solar power, as a means of reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

According to him:
“Nigeria possesses enormous agricultural potential capable of creating jobs, ensuring food security, and driving economic development. By embracing clean energy solutions such as solar power, we can reduce environmental degradation and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Mrs. Anozie highlighted the impact of human activities on climate change and environmental degradation. She called for increased public awareness, responsible environmental practices, and collective action to safeguard the planet for future generations.

In his remarks, Mr. Beckley Irumudomon, Founder and Chairman of LIBEDEF, encouraged young people to embrace agriculture as a viable tool for economic empowerment and national development. He stressed the importance of agricultural innovation, sustainable farming practices, and youth participation in building a resilient and food-secure nation.

The event concluded with a call for stronger collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector to advance climate action, promote renewable energy adoption, and strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Participants commended LIBEDEF for organizing the programme and expressed optimism that continued advocacy, education, and community engagement would contribute significantly to environmental sustainability and climate resilience in Nigeria.
