Fellow Nigerians,
As the climate crisis grows and our government removal of fuel subsidies while increasing unfair taxes, we must stand up for healthier and more equitable energy solutions.
The recent push by our leaders who import expensive CNG and wanting us to switch to it goes against the well-being of ordinary Nigerians. While it will keep enriching those at the top, it will plunge hardworking families deeper into poverty and precarity.
Instead of acquiescing to this, we must advocate for mass adoption of alternative technologies under local community control, like off-grid solar microgrids. These have already proven their advantages – providing reliable power without toxic fumes, uninterrupted power supply like “rain fall lights nor go dey” reducing health costs.
Best of all, they empower us to circumvent the centralized systems that have long neglected rural areas and the most vulnerable. Where you hear words like “ Nah 33 get light today, 11 fit get light next tomorrow, never cook oh we nor know when light go come” With microgrids, we determine our own energy futures and keep wealth circulating within our neighborhoods.
Rather than new burdensome taxes, our government should support solar installation through grants, low-interest loans and research partnerships. They must redirect fuel subsidies into training unemployed youth, women and engineers in renewable skills.
If we stand together demanding just energy policies that protect ordinary citizens and the environment, our leaders will have no choice but to listen. Our health, our wallets and the climate are too important to ignore.
The time has come to transition to prosperity not dependent on exploitation. With community oneness spirit and a shared vision, Nigeria can become a leader in affordable, clean technology benefiting all. Our future begins now.
