The people of Evbohenoba of Orhionmwon LGA of EDO STATE have borne the costs of oil extraction for too long without compensation or support. On May 30th , they took a stand. Over 200 residents, tired of empty promises, peacefully marched round to cry out bout the their neglect
Over the years, Summit Oil International and DuPont Midstream have profited from extracting oil underneath Evbohenoba’s land. Yet basic services like healthcare, education and water are missing. The one primary school is crowded with 2 different section of classes children per class. Medical emergencies are life-threatening as the nearest clinic is miles away.
“We’ve seen our land and rivers poisoned by pollution. Now our children suffer too without the resources to thrive,” Destiny Ose Aigbokhae of LILBECKKING DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION supported by OILWATCH AFRICA, who assisted community organizers. Leaders presented officials a list of demands, including construction of a clinic and improved school, along with a greater share of oil revenues to benefit frontline communities.
The protest was a first step to remedy injustice faced by this community. Evbohenoba’s residents shouldn’t have to accept exploitation by oil giants neglecting their wellbeing and rights.
